Kippford
Week Report by Duncan Gillespie - Sailing Secretary
The
annual Kippford Week finished last week with a total
of 70 boats competing in a number of classes. These
included 4 cruiser fast handicaps, 3 cruiser slow
handicaps, 10 Flying Fifteen's, 9 dinghy fast handicaps,
29 dinghy medium handicaps which included 6 Laser
Standards and 6 GP14's, 10 dinghy slow handicaps and
5 Laser Radials. The dinghy fast handicap included
2 catamarans a Formula 18 and a Spitfire. Handicap
racing uses a system called Portsmouth Yards stick
which is used in a calculation with the time taken
to complete the race. The theory of the formula is
that if everything is equal the answer to the formula
will result in the same time for each boat.
David Dunstan and Willie Patterson were the race officers
for Cruiser/Flying Fifteen's and Dinghies respectively.
Apart from Friday this was not an easy job in light
shifting winds. On Wednesday as with Wednesday of
Cadet Week the dinghy racing was abandoned before
they started and the cruisers and flying fifteens
were abandoned after they had started because they
were becalmed.
Competitors return year after year and even when Bassenthwaite
is running their sailing week at the same time numbers
between both events are similar. However, the Flying
Fifteen fleet remains strong when considering that
Cowes has 12 Flying Fifteen competitors against Kippford
Weeks 10.

Eagle
Trophy for High Flyer went to Angus Johnstone a young
lad who while about to start his race sailed over to
the committee boat and picked up an ensign from the
water which had been flying from the back of the committee
boat. A 420 had caught it and snapped the flagstaff
while making what was an illegal manoeuvre at their
start. He then gently came along side and handed it
back before starting his race.
